Fourteen-year-old skateboarder Jowan Joyce-Richards announced himself as one of Wales’ most exciting young talents after winning gold in the Best Trick category at the 2026 Skateboard GB Welsh Park & Street Open.
The event took place on 17–18 January 2026 at Spit & Sawdust Skatepark in Cardiff and marked the first major regional skateboarding competition of the year. Featuring both park and street disciplines and a £4,000 prize pool, the Welsh Open attracted competitors from across the UK as riders looked to start the season strongly.

Joyce-Richards, a TASS-supported athlete and student at Stanwell School in Penarth, stood out against an experienced field to claim top honours, underlining his potential in a sport that continues to grow rapidly on the global stage.
Despite his young age, Joyce-Richards’ performance demonstrated composure, creativity, and technical skill well beyond his years. With skateboarding set to become a mandatory Olympic sport at the 2028 Games, his success at the Welsh Open highlights a promising pathway into elite competition.
Those working with Joyce-Richards believe he has a “fantastic future” ahead of him, with his early achievements providing a strong foundation as he continues to develop within a high-performance environment.
The gold-medal performance represents a significant milestone in Joyce-Richards’ young career and positions him as a name to watch as the new skateboarding season unfolds.
