Cardiff Met-connected athletes, alumni and staff have been confirmed among the wider Team Wales squad for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, marking another proud moment for the university’s sporting community.

Team Wales has announced 114 athletes for the Games, which will take place from 23 July to 2 August 2026. The Welsh team will compete across 10 sports, including athletics and para athletics, swimming and para swimming, track cycling and para track cycling, gymnastics, bowls and para bowls, judo, boxing, weightlifting, netball and wheelchair 3x3 basketball.
The announcement comes on the same day as Cardiff Met welcomes the King’s Baton Relay to Cyncoed Campus, creating a major moment of celebration for Welsh sport and the university’s role within it. Several athletes from the Team Wales squad are expected to attend the event, which will bring together athletes, staff, students and the wider Cardiff Met community as excitement builds towards Glasgow 2026.
Team Wales will head to Glasgow with a squad made up of 66 female and 48 male athletes, including 22 para-athletes. The team includes Olympic, Paralympic and world champions, alongside returning Commonwealth Games medallists and emerging athletes preparing to represent Wales on the international stage.
Glasgow will host the Commonwealth Games for the second time, following the 2014 Games where Team Wales won 36 medals across 17 sports. The 2026 Games will also mark an historic first for Wales, with both the men’s and women’s wheelchair 3x3 basketball teams qualifying for the Commonwealth Games for the first time.
As the countdown to Glasgow continues, the Cardiff Met connections within Team Wales offer another powerful reminder of the university’s contribution to athletes, coaches and sporting pathways across Wales.
