20-year-old centre Rhys Cornelius is one of the current Cardiff Met students involved in the wider Wales men’s 3x3 basketball picture as the build-up to Glasgow 2026 gathers pace.

Born in Pontypridd and now competing within the Cardiff Met Archers programme, Cornelius is developing in an environment that has become a strong part of the game in Wales. Having started his basketball career with Pontypridd Panthers and Tonyrefail Tigers, he credits the university’s basketball set-up with taking his game to the next level with the training, facilities and coaches provided on-site. This has helped players like Cornelius progress through the student game and into the wider performance pathway, giving them the platform to compete at a high level while continuing their studies.
For Cornelius, this has proved successful, having represented Wales at the national level from U19, U20, and U23 as well as the men’s senior team. University sport can be a key stage in a basketball career, particularly in a format such as 3x3, where speed, decision-making and composure under pressure are vital. Those qualities are shaped over time, through training, competition and the daily demands of a serious performance environment.
As Wales prepares for its next key phase, Cornelius is among the players continuing to develop within Cardiff Met’s system and pushing to stay in the wider conversation around the men’s programme.
