Archers set sights on new BUCS Season after standout 2025/26 campaign

There is something different about a Wednesday at Cyncoed when the BUCS season is in full swing.

From early in the morning, campus begins to take on its familiar matchday feel. The Bench gets busier as students and staff queue for a pre-match coffee, Cardiff Met tracksuits and kit bags appear everywhere you look, and team buses begin rolling out of campus as Archers head across the country to compete.

Then there is another great Wednesday tradition: the turmoil of trying to find a parking space on campus.

It is busy, noisy and unmistakably BUCS Wednesday.

Soon, that familiar excitement will return as Cardiff Met’s teams prepare for another season of British Universities and Colleges Sport competition, following a 2025/26 campaign that delivered national silverware, promotion, league titles and deep knockout runs across the Archers programme.

As students return to Cardiff and Wednesday afternoons once again fill the sporting calendar, attention is already turning towards what promises to be another busy season.

Cardiff Met enters 2026/27 with plenty to build on after a year that underlined the depth of sporting talent across Cyncoed.

Hockey ready for the next challenge

One of the standout achievements of last season came from Cardiff Met Men’s Hockey.

The Archers finished their campaign by defeating Newcastle University 4-1 at Cyncoed on 1 April in the BUCS Open Premier (National) play-off, securing the result that sees the side make the step up for the new campaign.

It means a new challenge awaits in 2026/27 as Cardiff Met look to test themselves against some of the strongest university hockey programmes in Britain.

BUCS hockey fixtures will once again take place predominantly on Wednesdays, with the leading knockout competitions culminating at BUCS Big Wednesday in March.

National silverware for women’s rugby

There was already a Cardiff Met celebration at BUCS Big Wednesday in 2026, courtesy of the Women’s Rugby 2nd XV.

The Archers lifted the BUCS Women’s National Trophy after beating Manchester Metropolitan University 37-24 in the final.

Their route to the trophy included a 43-17 victory over Birmingham and an emphatic 46-10 semi-final win against St Mary’s before completing the job against Manchester Met.

At the highest level of university rugby, Cardiff Met’s Women’s 1st XV also finished fourth in BUCS Super Rugby during 2025/26, while the men finished sixth in their competition.

Both sides now have confirmed dates for the new campaign.

The men get Cardiff Met’s BUCS Super Rugby season underway at home to Brunel on Wednesday 23 September, before an early Cardiff derby away to Cardiff University on 7 October. Loughborough then visit Cyncoed a week later.

Cardiff Met Women begin away to Edinburgh on 14 October, with their first home fixture against Brunel a week later. Hartpury visit Cyncoed on 18 November, while the first Cardiff Met versus Cardiff derby of the women’s season is scheduled for 9 December.

Cricket continues to deliver

Cardiff Met Cricket was another programme to enjoy a memorable 2025/26 season.

The Men’s 1st XI completed an unbeaten league campaign to secure back-to-back Southern Premier League titles, extending an impressive run of form at the top level of university cricket.

There was further league success for the Men’s 2nd XI, who were also unbeaten on their way to the Western 1A title, their third league triumph since 2022.

The Women’s 1st XI, meanwhile, progressed all the way to the BUCS Female National Championship final, where they faced Loughborough UCCE at Wormsley Cricket Ground in June.

That followed a sixth consecutive appearance in the national semi-finals for the women’s programme and further demonstrated Cardiff Met’s consistency at the top end of the university game.

Football teams make their mark

There were strong national knockout campaigns on the football pitch too.

Cardiff Met Men’s 1st XI reached the semi-finals of the BUCS National Championship. After receiving a first-round bye, the Archers defeated Birmingham 1-0 at Cyncoed in the quarter-final before their run eventually came to an end away to Stirling in the last four.

The Women’s 1st XI also reached the latter stages of their National Championship. Cardiff Met opened with a 3-1 home victory over Nottingham Trent before travelling to Northumbria for the quarter-finals.

Those performances provide another platform for both programmes as a new league and knockout campaign begins.

Another season of opportunity

While the major team sports will once again provide much of the weekly Wednesday action, BUCS competition extends across the Cardiff Met sporting programme, from court and combat sports to athletics, swimming, rowing and individual championships.

Last season provided plenty of evidence of what Cardiff Met teams can achieve.

Now comes the challenge of doing it again.

For the men’s hockey programme, that means testing themselves at a new level. For the women’s rugby 2s, it means defending national silverware. For cricket, football and the Super Rugby sides, there is an opportunity to take another step after strong performances during 2025/26.

Across every sport, there will also be new students pulling on Cardiff Met colours for the first time and established Archers looking to leave their own mark on the university sporting calendar.

And before long, Wednesdays at Cyncoed will once again mean crowded coffee queues, packed car parks, team buses heading out through the gates and hundreds of Archers representing Cardiff Met across the country.

With Cardiff Met continuing its ambition to establish itself as Wales’ Sporting University, another BUCS season represents an opportunity to build on the successes of the past year and compete against the very best in university sport.

The countdown to 2026/27 is on.
