On Tuesday 3 February, Cardiff Met Rowing welcomed athletes from across South Wales as the club hosted a Talent Identification testing day in partnership with the GB Performance Development Academy (PDA).

Led by PDA coach Dan Harris, the session provided aspiring rowers with the opportunity to benchmark themselves against national development standards and gain exposure to the GB pathway.
A total of 28 students took part in the testing day, with participants travelling from both Cardiff and Swansea universities to attend. The event showcased the growing reputation of Cardiff Met Rowing as a hub for performance development within Welsh university sport.
Athletes completed a series of physical assessments designed to identify potential for progression within the GB Performance Development Academy system. The testing focused on key performance markers including power output, endurance capacity and physiological profiling.

Dan Harris spoke positively about the environment and standards on show throughout the day, highlighting both the quality of Cardiff Met’s facilities and the level of performance demonstrated by the athletes.
The Talent ID day not only offered students insight into the demands of elite-level rowing but also reinforced Cardiff Met’s commitment to creating clear progression pathways for student-athletes aiming to compete at the highest level.
Following the testing, two Cardiff Met students, Grace and Caitlyn, have been invited to attend the upcoming Performance Development Academy camp in March. The invitation marks a significant step in their rowing journeys and reflects the strength of the programme’s athlete development environment.
Their selection demonstrates the impact of providing students with direct access to national-level coaches and structured development opportunities.
A special thank you goes to Ifan for organising and delivering an outstanding event. The smooth delivery of the day ensured that both athletes and visiting staff experienced a professional and supportive testing environment.
As Cardiff Met continues to strengthen its links with national governing bodies and performance pathways, events such as this underline the university’s ambition to be recognised as Wales’ Sporting University.
