Record-Breaking British Rowing Championships for Cardiff Met

Cardiff Metropolitan University Boat Club produced a record-breaking performance at the British Rowing Championships in Nottingham, returning to Wales with four medals and two championship course records.

A squad of 12 Cardiff Met students travelled to the Championships hoping to build on the club's recent success at Henley Women's Regatta and raise the programme's profile on the national stage.

The Archers delivered, winning three golds and one silver, believed to be the club's largest-ever medal haul at the Championships. The weekend also brought championship course records in the Beginner Men's Single Scull and the Beginner Men's Coxed Four, underlining an outstanding two days for the developing programme.

Cardiff Met's performances were picked up by British Rowing's own commentary and reporting teams, who named the club as one of the stories of the Championships.

British Rowing's report noted that Cardiff Met's success was one of the recurring themes of the event, adding that the beginner events in particular belonged to the club. Oliver Nathan won the Open Single Scull, while Grace Chaffey and Gemma Bennett took the Women's Double Sculls to rapturous applause from coaches and teammates.

The results mark another significant step forward for Cardiff Met Rowing, building momentum as the club looks ahead to recruiting new students and developing its current athletes.

Head coach Ifan Cox said the achievements were a testament to the commitment shown by the whole squad.

"This success has really announced Cardiff Met as a competitive rowing club and will help us build momentum into next year, both through our recruitment and the continued progress of our current group," he said.

"A huge amount of credit must go to our athletes. Through their hard work, dedication and belief in the programme, we've managed to achieve something really special.

"There's a talented group of athletes here who are worth investing in, and I truly believe we'll continue to go from strength to strength and grow enormously as a club."

The British Rowing Championships bring together clubs and athletes from across the country, making Cardiff Met's medal haul and record-breaking performances an important milestone in the programme's development.

Cox also thanked those who have supported the club throughout the season.

"It's been a great year of learning, and I'm really looking forward to continuing to learn and grow the programme. I'd like to thank everyone for their continued help and support throughout the year, I strongly believe there's the potential to create something really special here."
