Tennis Takes Centre Stage at Llandaff Fields for Barclays Big Tennis Weekend

Llandaff Fields was buzzing with activity on Sunday afternoon as 92 people took part in a free Barclays Big Tennis Weekend event, delivered by Cardiff Met Tennis.

The event formed part of the national Barclays Big Tennis Weekends campaign, an LTA initiative designed to encourage people of all ages and abilities to pick up a racket and experience tennis for free at local venues across Great Britain. The programme aims to introduce new players to the sport in a fun, welcoming environment and help more people discover the benefits of playing tennis regularly.

The two-hour session attracted participants from across the local community, with many attendees stepping onto a tennis court for the very first time. Families, children and adults all joined in, creating a fantastic atmosphere in the heart of Cardiff during a weekend that also coincided with the excitement of Wimbledon.

Throughout the afternoon, participants had the opportunity to take part in a variety of tennis stations featuring fun challenges, skill-based activities and engaging games. Designed to cater for complete beginners as well as those with some previous experience, the activities helped players develop fundamental tennis skills while enjoying a relaxed and social environment.

One of the highlights of the day was a giant inflatable target game, which proved hugely popular with players of all ages. The inflatable challenge provided an exciting way for participants to test their accuracy and compete with friends and family, adding even more fun to an already action-packed afternoon.

The event was generously supported by SPAR, who provided refreshments for everyone in attendance. Their support helped ensure participants could enjoy a drink and snack while taking a break from the on-court activities and socialising with other members of the community.

Leading the event was Cardiff Met Community Head Coach Josh Wilkinson, who was delighted with the turnout and enthusiasm shown by everyone who attended.

“It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying tennis at Llandaff Fields. The sunshine certainly helped create a brilliant atmosphere, and it was especially rewarding to welcome so many children and families who were trying tennis for the first time. With Wimbledon inspiring people across the country, events like this are a great way to introduce new players to the sport and show how much fun tennis can be.”

The success of the event highlights the growing appetite for accessible community tennis opportunities in Cardiff and demonstrates the positive impact that free events can have in encouraging people to get active and try something new.
