South Wales Celebrate Historic U18 County Cup Success as Cardiff Met–Tennis Wales Partnership Strengthens Performance Pathway

South Wales is celebrating a landmark moment after both its U18 Boys’ and Girls’ County Cup teams produced outstanding performances, achievements that highlight the growing strength of Welsh tennis and the positive influence of the Cardiff Met and Tennis Wales 14+ National Performance Programme.

The Boys’ U18 South Wales team made county history, winning their County Cup Division 1 for the first time at this age group. Seven of the nine players are currently accessing weekly training at Cardiff Met Tennis, demonstrating how the national pathway is helping to prepare Welsh players for higher levels of competition. South Wales secured excellent victories over Cambridgeshire, Yorkshire and Surrey, topping their group after a weekend of consistent, high quality performances.

The Girls’ U18 South Wales team mirrored the boys’ momentum, winning their league and earning promotion to Division 2. With six of the nine players involved in the Cardiff Met and Tennis Wales performance environment, their success further reflects the effectiveness of Wales’ joined up approach to junior performance tennis. Their achievement highlights the improving depth and competitiveness of girls’ tennis in Wales.

Every player contributed throughout the weekend, a success that represents years of continuous progression for the South Wales squads. While a range of factors support player development across the region, the Cardiff Met–Tennis Wales partnership has become a significant contributor, strengthening the national system and providing Welsh athletes with enhanced training opportunities.

The importance of the partnership was underlined by Cardiff Met’s Head of Tennis, Billy Barclay, who commented:

“We are delighted to have such a strong and forward thinking partnership with Tennis Wales. Seeing these players develop through the programme has been a privilege, and it’s something our coaching staff should feel immensely proud of.”

Together, these results show that South Wales teams are pushing on year after year, raising standards and competing at national level. At the same time, the success of so many athletes involved in Cardiff Met and Tennis Wales training programme reflects the wider strength and growing ambition of Cardiff Met’s Tennis influence.

With both South Wales squads promoted and momentum continuing to build, the future of Welsh performance tennis looks increasingly bright.
