Schools take on Mini London Marathon at Cyncoed Campus

Updated: 5 days ago

This week pupils from two local primary schools laced up their trainers to take part in a vibrant Mini London Marathon in Schools event at Cyncoed Campus, held just one day after the iconic London Marathon itself.

The event formed part of a national initiative led by the London Marathon Foundation, designed to encourage children to be physically active by completing a two mile “Mini Marathon” within their school setting or local community. To bring the experience to life, schools were invited onto Cyncoed Campus where the course was transformed into an authentic marathon-style venue, complete with upbeat music, London Marathon banners and an exciting finish line.

A total of 64 children from St John Lloyd’s Primary School and St Phillip Evans Primary School took part, enjoying a warm and sunny day that added to the celebratory atmosphere. Pupils were given the freedom to complete the challenge in any way that suited them — whether running, jogging, walking, hopping, skipping or jumping — with the key aim being to complete two miles or remain active for at least 30 minutes.

Throughout the morning, smiles were on display as children encouraged one another around the course. The highlight for many was breaking through the finish line on their final lap, proudly celebrating their achievement in true marathon style. Regardless of how they chose to move, every child successfully completed the two mile distance in under 30 minutes.

Much like the London Marathon itself, there was also an opportunity for those who wished to enjoy a competitive element. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were available, with an impressive performance from the gold medallist who completed the loop in under 20 minutes.

Events such as the Mini London Marathon in Schools complement national physical activity initiatives including The Daily Mile, a simple and inclusive programme that encourages children to take part in regular movement during the school day. By promoting opportunities like these, schools can support children in developing positive, lifelong habits around physical activity, enjoyment and wellbeing. This event also marked the final event supported by this year’s Sport Management Placement cohort. Their enthusiasm, professionalism and commitment have played a key role in the successful delivery of events throughout the academic year, and their support was once again evident in creating a fun, safe and memorable experience for all involved. It was a fantastic way to finish the year on a high, and sincere thanks are extended to the cohort for their hard work and dedication across the year
