There are not many athletes who can say their Commonwealth Games story began on the way home from a school prom.
For Welsh sprinter, Hannah Brier, that is exactly what happened. In 2014, aged just 16, she travelled straight from prom night to Glasgow to compete for Wales, stepping into one of the biggest moments of her young career. More than a decade later, with the Commonwealth Games returning to the city this summer, the former Cardiff Met student could be in line for what would be a remarkable full-circle moment.

Being one of the most recognisable names in Welsh sprinting, Brier has undoubtedly made her mark across 200 metres and relay events. But she didn't stop there. Brier stepped up to the 400 metre track, a move that has brought a new dimension to her career. It is a demanding transition, but one that reflects both her experience and her willingness to evolve at a crucial stage of the Olympic and Commonwealth cycle.
Her connection to Cardiff Met remains an important part of that journey. During her time at the university, Brier balanced study with elite training in an environment built to support athletes with serious ambitions. Cardiff Met’s long-term partnership with Team Wales is rooted in exactly that idea: creating opportunities for talented athletes to develop in a setting where performance and education can move together.
As the final squad qualification picture develops over the coming weeks, athletes across Wales will be looking to turn promise into selection.
For Brier, Glasgow is not just another destination in the calendar. It is the place where her Commonwealth story began, and perhaps where another chapter is still waiting to be written.
