Met Community Supports Drowning Prevention Week 2026

Cardiff Met Sport and Met Community are proud to support Drowning Prevention Week (13–20 June 2026), a national campaign dedicated to raising awareness of water safety and helping to prevent avoidable accidents.

Delivered by the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), Drowning Prevention Week is the UK’s largest annual water safety campaign. It focuses on equipping children and young people with essential knowledge and skills ahead of the summer holidays, when time spent around water increases significantly.

Why water safety matters

Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death in the UK, with many incidents occurring in everyday environments such as rivers, lakes, and coastal areas. The vast majority of these tragedies are preventable with the right awareness and education.

By working with schools, communities, and partners, we aim to promote simple but vital messages that can help keep people safe.

The Water Safety Code

At the heart of the campaign is the Water Safety Code, which encourages everyone to remember four key actions:

• Stop and Think – take time to assess your surroundings and look for dangers

• Stay Together – always go with friends or family and swim where lifeguards are present

• Float – if you fall into the water, stay calm, float on your back, and control your breathing

• Call 999 – in an emergency, call for help (ask for the Coastguard if at the coast)

These simple steps can make a life-saving difference.

Supporting schools and communities

Throughout the week, Met Community is working with schools and local partners to share water safety messages through resources, guidance, and virtual assemblies designed to engage pupils of all ages.

These sessions provide a flexible way for schools to participate, helping young people build confidence and awareness around water safety in an engaging and accessible format.

We encourage everyone to take part by sharing messages, starting conversations, and accessing free resources to support learning.
