The event showcased the rapid growth of flag football across the region, with participants demonstrating excellent skill, sportsmanship and enthusiasm throughout the day. Teams competed across multiple age groups, culminating in the crowning of four well-deserving winners:

• Primary Mixed Winners: Llysfaen Primary School

• U13 Mixed Winners: Ysgol Dyffryn Aman

• U15 Mixed Winners: Mary Immaculate

• U15 Girls Winners: Mary Immaculate

Following their success at the Cardiff qualifier, all winning teams will now progress to the Welsh Championships, which will be held at the University later this month. We wish all teams the very best of luck as they represent their schools on the national stage.

Alongside the impressive performances on the field, the event was expertly supported and managed by Sport Management students currently undertaking their Open Campus placement at the University. The placement students — Plank, Oscar, Travis, Sarah and Mia — played a central role in the organisation and delivery of the event, demonstrating excellent professionalism, leadership and teamwork throughout the day. They were also supported by Media student Tom, who captured the event and helped showcase the success of the tournament.

The event was further strengthened by the support of James and Brian from the Rhondda Red Kites flag football team, based in Rhondda Cynon Taf, whose experience and enthusiasm added real value to the competition. They were joined by Morgan and Rhys from the Archer Leadership Programme, who made an excellent contribution to the smooth running and positive atmosphere of the day.

The atmosphere throughout the tournament was lively and inclusive, combining fun with a strong competitive edge. Organisers were particularly impressed by the high standard of competition across all age groups and the outstanding performance of the students involved in delivering the event.

Overall, the NFL Flag Football Qualifier Event was a huge success, celebrating young people’s participation in sport, developing leadership and employability skills, and strengthening partnerships across education and community sport. The day was a fantastic example of what can be achieved through collaboration, commitment and a shared passion for sport.
