Cardiff Met Rugby Launches Significant Coaching Investment & Recruitment Campaign

Updated: Mar 26

Cardiff Met Rugby has announced a significant expansion of its coaching and performance team, with several new full-time roles being created across the men’s and women’s programmes.

The recruitment drive comes following the recent announcement that long-serving Head Coach Dr Ian Gardner steps down from his role, marking the end of a successful period for the programme while opening the door to a new phase of investment and growth.

The Cardiff Met Rugby Programme will introduce four new positions: Men’s Head CoachMen’s Forwards CoachWomen’s Backs Coach, and Men’s Physiotherapist, strengthening the support structure around student-athletes across both programmes. These roles will join our existing coaches and support staff.

The move reflects the university’s long-term ambition to build a high-performance environment capable of competing consistently at the top level of university rugby.

Three-times British & Irish Lion and Cardiff Met Head of Performance Rugby David Young said “This investment represents a huge step forward for our men’s and women’s rugby programmes. By introducing dedicated, additional full-time roles across coaching and performance support, we are creating an environment where our student-athletes can thrive and perform at their best.

“Our ambition is clear. We want to be competing consistently at the top end of both the men’s and women’s BUCS competitions, as well as our Welsh National League team. Building a strong coaching and performance team is fundamental to achieving that goal.”

Reflecting on the recent announcement, Young also paid tribute to ‘Gards’ for the impact he has made during his time leading the men’s side.

“Ian has played a key role in the development of the Cardiff Met rugby programme over the last decade. He has contributed significantly to the development of players, the culture of the club and the continued growth of both participation and performance at Cardiff Met. ‘Gards’ has been very supportive in evolving the make-up of our coaching team and the creation of more full-time roles within the programme. His commitment to the players and the club has been outstanding, and he leaves the men’s programme in a very strong position.”

The recruitment campaign is open with applications closing on Monday 6th April.
