Cardiff Met representatives continue to make their mark in Glasgow

Jeremiah Azu finished fifth in the Commonwealth Games men's 100m final, Ellie Bowen produced a personal best in the F57 shot put, Dan Pitt advanced to the boxing quarter-finals and Cardiff Met's netball connections helped Wales secure their first victory of Glasgow 2026, during another busy two days of competition.

Cardiff Met athletes, alumni and Archers players continued their Glasgow 2026 campaigns across athletics, para athletics, boxing, swimming, netball and 3x3 wheelchair basketball on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 July.

Azu into a second successive Commonwealth final

The standout individual performance came from Jeremiah Azu, who reached his second consecutive Commonwealth Games men's 100m final.

Azu began his campaign on Monday by winning his opening heat in 10.10 seconds, comfortably progressing to the semi-finals. He returned to a rain-soaked Scotstoun Stadium on Tuesday and produced a season's best of 10.00 seconds to finish second in his semi-final and secure automatic qualification for the final.

Just over two hours later, Azu lined up against a world-class field in torrential conditions. Cameroon's Emmanuel Eseme took gold as Azu crossed the line fifth in 10.03 seconds, matching his finishing position from Birmingham 2022.

Bowen sets a personal best on Commonwealth debut

There was also cause for celebration for Ellie Bowen in the women's F57 shot put final. The 17-year-old, competing at her first Commonwealth Games, produced a personal-best throw of 6.48m to finish sixth.

Pitt through to the boxing quarter-finals

Current Cardiff Met student Dan Pitt continued his impressive run in the boxing competition with a second successive unanimous-decision victory.

Having defeated Samoa's Dee Ioapo in his opening contest, Pitt overcame Papua New Guinea's Kua Ganua Mua on Monday to book his place in the men's light-heavyweight (80kg) quarter-finals, in what World Boxing described as a strong session for Welsh boxing, with three Welsh wins on the day.

Speaking after his win over Ioapo, Pitt reflected on the support he'd received from home: "It's a great community and I've had loads of support from home."

Knight gains further experience in the pool

At Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Jack Knight returned to individual competition in the men's 100m backstroke. The Cardiff Met swimmer progressed from the morning heats into the semi-finals, where he finished 14th overall.

Knight's Glasgow campaign has already included a Commonwealth Games bronze medal, won as part of Wales' men's 4x200m freestyle relay team. His 100m backstroke performance provided further valuable international experience during his Commonwealth Games debut.

Netball: Wales open their account in style

Cardiff Met's strong netball connections were at the centre of Wales' first victory of the Games as the Welsh Feathers recorded a commanding 74-30 win over Trinidad and Tobago.

Captain Bethan Dyke, Georgia Rowe and Phillipa Yarranton were all named in the starting seven. Rowe delivered an outstanding shooting performance in the circle as Wales established a strong first-quarter lead, with the Feathers dominant defensively throughout to seal their first points of Pool B.

Dyke provided further experience and leadership during her fourth Commonwealth Games as Wales moved clear of their opponents and secured a comfortable win.

Historic campaigns end for wheelchair basketball squads

There was disappointment but immense pride for Wales' men's and women's 3x3 wheelchair basketball teams, although both squads can reflect proudly on historic first Commonwealth Games campaigns.

Dan May and Will Bishop were part of the men's side that completed its pool programme against Scotland on Monday. May opened the scoring in Tuesday's play-in match against Australia, but the tournament favourites eventually pulled away for the win.

The women's team, featuring current Cardiff Met student Libi Phillips, Cardiff Met Archers Women's Premier League player Chloe Morgan and Archers national league player Molly Lander, faced Scotland in their final pool match before meeting Canada in the play-in round. A strong start against Canada was not enough to prevent defeat and the end of their competition.

Despite the results, both teams have broken new ground as the first Welsh men's and women's 3x3 wheelchair basketball squads to compete at a Commonwealth Games. Cardiff Met alumna Beth Jones has also played an important role behind the scenes as team manager for both squads.

Across two demanding days, Cardiff Met's representatives reached a sprint final, achieved a personal best, progressed in the boxing competition, secured a first netball victory and completed historic wheelchair basketball campaigns. Their performances continue to demonstrate the breadth of Cardiff Met's contribution to Team Wales and the University's growing presence on the national and international sporting stage.
