Jeremiah Azu Selected for World Relays and World Indoor Championships

Former Cardiff Met student and hosted athlete Jeremiah Azu has been selected to represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland at two major international events this spring, continuing a remarkable run of success on the global stage.

Azu has been named in the Novuna GB & NI squad for the 2026 World Athletics Relays, which will take place in Gaborone, Botswana (2–3 May). He is part of the men’s 4x100m relay squad, joining an experienced group of British sprinters that includes Zharnel Hughes and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake.

The World Athletics Relays are a key event in the international calendar, with teams competing to secure qualification for the 2027 World Athletics Championships while continuing preparations towards the LA 2028 Olympic Games.

Before that, Azu will also compete at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland (20–22 March), where he will attempt to defend his men’s 60m world title.

The Cardiff-based sprinter enjoyed a standout indoor season last year and has since established himself as one of Britain’s leading sprint athletes. His performances over 60 metres have cemented his position as a key figure within the national sprint programme.

During his time in Cardiff, Azu studied at Cardiff Metropolitan University and trained within the University’s high-performance athletics environment, developing his career alongside his academic studies.

His continued presence on the global stage is another proud moment for the Cardiff Met athletics community, highlighting the strength of the University’s performance sport pathway in supporting athletes competing at the very highest level.
