Cardiff Met Athletes in Contention for 3x3 Commonwealth Games Qualification

As preparations ramp up for 3x3 Commonwealth Games qualification, Cardiff Met Sport is proudly represented across the Wales performance pathway, with current students, coaches and alumni all in contention for places.

From senior leadership roles to long-list selections, the University’s impact across 3x3 and wheelchair basketball highlights the strength of its high-performance environment.
Women’s 3x3: Leadership and International Pathways
Cardiff Met’s presence is strongly felt within the women’s 3x3 programme.
Laura Shanahan, current SLB player and co-captain, will lead Wales Senior Women’s 3x3 as Head Coach during qualification. Her appointment underlines the leadership and experience embedded within the Met system.
Fellow co-captain Emma Bailey has been named on the long list for player selection, placing her firmly in the frame for the Commonwealth Games squad.
Two Cardiff Met alumni competing in NCAA Division 1 basketball in the United States are also in contention:
Issy Bunyan – Montana State
Cary Roy – St Peter’s
Their inclusion reflects the international reach of Cardiff Met’s basketball pathway.
Wheelchair Basketball: National Leadership and Squad Depth
Cardiff Met continues to shape the national wheelchair programme.
Caroline Matthews, the University’s National League Head Coach, returns for a second term as Head Coach of the Wales Men’s 3x3 Wheelchair Team, supported by Team Manager Jo Coates-McGrath.

Women: Libi Phillips, Rebecca Ganley, Chloe Morgan, Anastasia Blease (Alumni)
Men’s 3x3: Strength Across the Performance Squad
The men’s 3x3 pathway also features strong Cardiff Met representation, with athletes involved across the build-up to qualification, long squad and Wales 3x3 performance squad.
Under James Dawe (Head Coach) and Stefan Rosier (Head of 3x3), the programme continues to develop depth and opportunity.
