Cardiff Met Basketball has paid tribute to Jo Coates-McGrath, a beloved member of the Archers family whose impact on wheelchair basketball and the wider community will never be forgotten.

Jo was a driving force behind wheelchair basketball at Cardiff Met and a constant presence around the club. Known for her legendary hair, courtside energy and iconic post-game selfies, Jo’s enthusiasm and passion helped shape the welcoming and inclusive environment that defines the Archers programme today.

More than anything, Jo was dedicated to supporting others. She worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone had the opportunity to be part of the sport, helping countless individuals begin or continue their journeys in wheelchair basketball.
Her influence extended far beyond the court, and the outpouring of messages from players, coaches and friends reflects the difference she made to so many lives.
Archers players honoured Jo during the final weekend of the Women’s League, celebrating her legacy in the best way possible by competing with passion and enjoying the game she loved.
The Division 1 side produced strong performances against Mohawks and Leicester Cobras, while the Division 3 team displayed tremendous spirit across their matches despite challenges with classification.
Coach Caroline Matthews said:
“It's been a pleasure to coach the team through this round of Women’s League. Thank you to everyone who made it possible and for all the support we have given each other over the past few days. Jo will always be in our hearts.”
The Archers junior teams have also been in action, taking on older opposition with determination and pride across two rounds of fixtures this month.
Everyone at Cardiff Met Basketball extends their love and thoughts to Jo’s family, friends and all who knew her. Her legacy will live on through the opportunities created for future players and the inclusive community she helped build.
