Golden night for Cardiff Met as Davies and Oduwaiye lead Glasgow medal success

Cardiff Met-connected athletes enjoyed one of their finest days of Glasgow 2026, winning gold and silver in the discus, securing a guaranteed boxing medal and recording several outstanding top-five performances.

Two golds among Team Wales' Day 6 medal haul came through athletes with Cardiff Met connections, while defending boxing champion Rosie Eccles ensured that another medal will follow after progressing to the semi-finals.

Davies successfully defends Commonwealth title

Aled Davies produced another championship performance at Scotstoun Stadium to retain his Commonwealth men's discus F42-44/F61-64 title.

The former Cardiff Met student recorded a best throw of 48.38m, with the result converted through the combined classification scoring system to place him at the top of the standings.

The victory secured back-to-back Commonwealth titles for Davies, following his triumph at Birmingham 2022. He had previously claimed silver when the Games were last staged in Glasgow in 2014.

After the event Aled said "I still can't believe I've done it."

"My performances haven't been there and I've made a lot of changes. I had kind of accepted that I was going to take a few steps back to then go forward with a bigger picture in mind like LA 2028"

"It was hard out there, with a strong field but I'm just glad I delivered my best performance of the year when it mattered"

There was further Cardiff Met success in the women's discus F42-44/F61-64 as Funmi Oduwaiye impressed on her Commonwealth Games debut.

Oduwaiye immediately took control of the competition with an opening throw of 38.52m, setting a new Games Record for her F44 classification. The Cardiff-based athlete held the gold-medal position until Nigeria's Goodness Nwachukwu produced a world-record throw of 39.66m, leaving Oduwaiye with a hugely impressive silver, part of a Welsh double podium alongside bronze medallist Bree Cronin.

Fumni said "That was incredible, I wasn't expecting to set any kind of record today but I'm glad I did, I did myself proud. The first round was easy, I took it nice and easy and that was my best throw. I'm glad I got one out there so I could calm myself"

Team Wales athletics captain and former Cardiff Met student Harrison Walsh also impressed in the men's discus final, registering a season's best to finish fifth alongside Davies.

Former Cardiff Met student, staff member and coach Adele Nicoll rounded off an excellent evening for the University's athletics contingent, recording a best throw of 16.33m to take fifth place in the women's shot put final.

Eccles guarantees third consecutive Commonwealth medal

Cardiff Met alumna Rosie Eccles produced a dominant performance in her opening bout of Glasgow 2026, stopping South Africa's Samukelisiwe Sinothile Ncube in the second round of their women's 70kg quarter-final.

The referee brought the contest to an end after Eccles forced two knockdowns, sending the defending champion into Friday's semi-finals and guaranteeing her at least a bronze medal. It means the Team Wales Opening Ceremony flag bearer will win a medal at a third successive Commonwealth Games, having secured silver at Gold Coast 2018 before winning gold in Birmingham four years later.

Eccles will now face world number two Arundhati Choudhary of India for a place in the final.

Current Cardiff Met student Daniel Pitt's impressive first Commonwealth Games campaign came to an end in the men's 80kg quarter-finals. Pitt pushed Australia's Paul Trainor throughout a closely contested bout, but a strong final round from the Australian saw him claim victory by split decision. Despite the defeat, reaching the last eight marked another important milestone for the young Welsh boxer.

Knight completes strong Games in the pool

Jack Knight capped a strong Games in the pool on the final day of the swimming programme at Tollcross. Knight led off the Welsh men's 4x100m medley relay team on the backstroke leg in both the morning heats and evening final, with Wales qualifying in seventh position before matching that placing in the final.

The relay brought a productive Games to a close for Knight, who had already earned a bronze medal after helping Wales qualify for the men's 4x200m freestyle relay final earlier in the competition.

At the Hydro, the Wales netball squad, featuring Bethan Dyke, Georgia Rowe and Phillipa Yarranton, took on one of the world's leading teams in New Zealand, going down 65-37 in a physical Pool B contest that offered a valuable test ahead of the tournament's closing stages.

Day 6 provided another powerful demonstration of Cardiff Met's influence across elite Welsh sport: gold and silver medals, a guaranteed boxing medal, two fifth-place athletics finishes and representation in swimming and netball all reflected the breadth of talent connected to the University.
