Cardiff Met secure Cymru Premier status as season draws to a close

Updated: Apr 28

Cardiff Met FC will head into the summer with their place in the JD Cymru Premier secured, bringing a demanding campaign to a positive close and ensuring the Archers will be part of a new era for top-flight football in Wales next season.

In the end, safety was confirmed with a vital 2-1 home victory over Bala Town at Cyncoed Stadium, a result that underlined the team’s resilience and proved decisive in guaranteeing Cardiff Met’s status in the league. It was one of the key moments in the closing weeks of the season, alongside another important win over Llanelli Town, as the Archers found the results they needed at exactly the right time.

That late-season form ensured Cardiff Met avoided being dragged any deeper into the relegation battle and allowed the club to finish the campaign knowing its future remains in the top tier. In a season where consistency was hard-earned and pressure was never far away, securing survival represents an important achievement.

It also carries extra significance because of what comes next.

The 2026/27 season will mark the beginning of a new format for the JD Cymru Premier, with the league expanding from 12 teams to 16. Under the revised structure, clubs will play each other home and away before splitting into three groups, with places in the Championship Race, European Challenger and Survival Zone all on the line.

For Cardiff Met, staying up means more than simply extending their time in the division. It means the club will be part of a fresh chapter in the domestic game, with the new structure designed to create more meaningful fixtures, greater competitive balance and increased opportunities to grow the profile of the league.

From a Cardiff Met perspective, that gives the end of this season a sense of importance beyond survival alone. The Archers have made sure they will still be at Welsh football’s top table when the competition enters its next phase.

With the current campaign now all but complete, attention can begin to shift towards what comes next. There will no doubt be lessons to take from a hard-fought season, but there is also encouragement in the way Cardiff Met finished, delivering when the pressure was greatest and securing their future in the Cymru Premier.

For now, the outcome is clear. Cardiff Met have done enough to stay up, and in doing so have earned their place in the league’s next chapter.
