RISE 3x3 Comes to Cardiff Met

Cardiff Metropolitan University was delighted to welcome RISE 3x3 to Cardiff, bringing together an exciting mix of Cardiff Met students, international athletes, NBL players and Welsh national-team talent.

The event featured teams representing Wales Men and Wales U23s, alongside players from the Cardiff Met and Archers basketball programmes. Cardiff Met students including Alonzo Rosario, Casey Smith, Tom Gilbert and Rhys Cornelius competed alongside Archers D1 NBL players such as Lucas Scotland and Gareth Williams.

The event also provided a fantastic opportunity for Cardiff Met’s international student-athletes, with Mac Jones, Thompson Patrick and Titus Stegall among those competing. For students who have travelled from overseas to study and play basketball in Wales, opportunities such as RISE 3x3 add real value to the university experience — allowing them to compete, build relationships and become part of the wider basketball community. The team of international students made the finals day in London, adding another event to their basketball calendar. 

The involvement of Wales Men and Wales U23s also created a unique environment for Cardiff Met students to compete alongside and learn from players operating at the highest levels of the Welsh game.

The Cardiff Met Men’s Basketball Programme played an important role in helping facilitate the event, further strengthening the connection between university basketball, the national pathway and the wider basketball community in Wales.

RISE 3x3 was also a fantastic opportunity to showcase Cardiff Met’s facilities and sporting environment as the opportunity to join the competition spread far and wide, with players coming in from location spanning Swansea to Bath.

Ultimately, the event was about more than competition. It provided our students with a memorable experience, exposed them to different levels of the game and helped create connections that extend beyond the basketball court.

RISE 3x3 was a great showcase for Cardiff Met, a brilliant experience for our students and another positive step in connecting university basketball with the wider Welsh basketball pathway.
