Cardiff Met Sport Deliver Primary School Football in Llanrumney

Updated: Feb 23

During 2024-2026 Cardiff Met Football Academy have worked alongside the PA & I team on the Move More strategy to run primary school football fixtures in Llanrumney at Cardiff University Fields Facility. The project aims to create more opportunity for young people to play football, as well as to break down barriers preventing access.

The project started following conversations with school staff in Llanrumney. We discovered that many schools and pupils in the local area didn't often get to access 3g pitches or competitive opportunities (against other schools). Barriers also included a lack of transportation to access facilities outside of the East, a lack of equipment (goal posts) as well as access to safe green spaces. Many of the local football clubs were at maximum capacity, with long waiting lists and so if a young person wasn't getting to play in school they may not be playing.

Cardiff Met Sport were connected to Cardiff University Sports Fields on Mendip Road - a pillar of East Cardiff sporting communities. Both universities saw an opportunity to come together to increase access to facilities and sport.

There have been a total of eight fixtures so far with another two in the calendar for this academic year. Schools are asked to bring young people that might not get to play football outside of school, to the events. Attendance at the fixtures has ranged from four schools and forty pupils to nine schools and ninety pupils. Teachers and staff have told us that this is a " Great opportunity for children to mix with other children from the local community. To encourage participation in exercise and the opportunity to see excellent facilities, many have never played on 3G. Only two of my 10 children knew about the place".
