NFL Flag Welsh Championships bring schools from across Wales to Cyncoed Campus

Off the back of our Cardiff Qualifier held earlier this month, we were proud to host the NFL UK & Ireland team for the NFL Flag Welsh Championships. Teams from across Wales travelled to our iconic Cyncoed Campus to compete for a place in the NFL Flag British Championships, taking place in Manchester on 17 June.

The Championships welcomed 11 schools and 11 young people, highlighting the continued growth of NFL Flag across Wales and the appetite for competitive, inclusive school sport. Building on the success of our recent qualifier event, the day delivered high quality competition in a vibrant, festival style environment.

It was a busy and exciting day, with games taking place across two of our 3G pitches on campus. Music played throughout the event, creating a fun and engaging atmosphere for the children, while large championship trophies and free NFL kit added to the occasion. Each team was provided with official NFL stash, allowing players to represent and wear authentic NFL team colours and branding, further enhancing the experience and connection to the sport.

Welsh Champions and British Championship Qualifiers

Schools competed across four championship categories, with the Welsh champions earning progression to the British Championships in Manchester. The winners were:

• Primary Mixed Welsh Champions:

🏆 Gwynedd C.P School (Flintshire)

• 13U Mixed Welsh Champions:

🏆 Ysgol Dyffryn Aman (Camarthenshire)

• 15U Open Welsh Champions:

🏆 Mary Immaculate High School (Cardiff)

• 15U Girls Welsh Champions:

🏆 Mary Immaculate High School (Cardiff)- progressed automatically through to the national finals

The Welsh Championships marked an important milestone on the NFL Flag pathway, giving young people the opportunity to compete at a national level while developing teamwork, confidence, and sporting skills.

“The NFL Flag Great Britain schools pathway includes more schools than ever, including the addition of the 15u Open category to add to three strong pathways and continue the pathway for students and schools to continue playing NFL Flag. Across Wales we continue to see great growth in participation which leads to strong competition at the Wales Championships. Good luck to the four teams who will represent Wales at the NFL Flag Great Britain National Championships in June.”
