Cardiff Met Archers Duo Represent Great Britain on the World Stage

Cardiff Met Archers’ Sarah Wagstaff and Laura Shanahan have represented Great Britain at the 13th FIMBA Maxibasketball World Championships in Athens, Greece.

Cardiff Met’s Head of Basketball, Wagstaff, and Archers captain Shanahan were among 17 members of the Welsh basketball community selected for Great Britain Masters teams at the tournament. The championships welcomed thousands of players from across the world, competing across a wide range of age categories in one of the sport’s leading Masters events.

Wagstaff captained the GB Maxis 40+ team to a Bronze medal in the competition. After a semi-final loss to Germany, the team stormed back to take the Win over Poland in an edge of the seat bronze medal match at the Athens Olympic Stadium. 

For Shanahan, the selection represents another milestone in a career that continues to combine playing and coaching at a high level. Alongside captaining the Archers and representing Great Britain’s Women’s 35+ team, she has also taken on the role of Women’s Head Coach for Wales 3x3.

Their involvement in Athens highlights both the quality within the Cardiff Met Archers programme and basketball’s ability to provide meaningful opportunities for players to continue competing and representing their country throughout their sporting journey.
